General Safety

Safety is everyone’s job.

To keep the Range safe all must do their part. Please report any unsafe incidents to the Range Staff at the Range office. If the office is closed then call the number on the front of this booklet (760-505- 7223)

Members observing another member breaking the rules or engaging in unsafe conduct should immediately caution them. Further misconduct should be reported to the Range Staff as soon as possible.

Eye and ear protection is required to be worn by all personnel while on the firing line of all ranges.

WARNING: Airborne lead and loud noises may cause fetal distress in pregnant women.

Alcoholic beverages shall not be consumed while on the Range. No members, associate member, visitor or guest may use the Range or its facilities while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This includes prescription drugs which warn against driving or operating machinery (impaired judgement).

Members displaying unsportsmanlike conduct or violating Range rules are subject to immediate termination of membership without reimbursement of membership fee. Unauthorized trimming of vegetation or destruction of other Range property will result in termination of membership.

Range Staff is the authority at Rainbow Range and may suspend or terminate membership for violation of the Range Rules or other appropriate justification. 

The Range is not a playground. Watch your guests, visitors and children carefully. You are responsible for their behavior.

Saftey Rules

ALL RANGES

SAFETY is the responsibility of each person at the Range.

  • All personnel on the range shall wear eye and hearing protection.

  • If you witness an unsafe act, with courtesy, 0%fEFTKe correct safe practice.

  • Report any safety concerns or unsafe acts to Range Staff.

  • Range Staff may, at their discretion, suspend Range privileges for the remainder of the day or suspend range membership for failure to comply with the Rules of the Range. 

SAFE GUN HANDLING

  • Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

  • Always shoot from designated shooting positions

  • Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.

FIREARMS

  • Always keep muzzle pointed down range (toward the target area) or in a safe direction.

  • Guns shall be loaded only on the firing line.

  • Unload guns when not shooting.

  • Keep action open when not firing.

 RANGE IS CLOSED

  • This means NO shooting...

  • When a cease fire is called, all weapons shall be unloaded and set down with action open.

  • A cease fire shall be called, and range closed when anyone is down range.

  • When closed all guns shall be empty with action open & magazines out of firearm. When closed all guns will be out of hands and lying down.

TARGETS

  • Place paper targets on cardboard centered between the wooden frames. This will, if you are a good shot, avoid damage to the frame from bullets.

  • When placing target frames in holders or patching the targets, walk around to the back of the berm, do not walk up on the dirt slope.

  • Secure targets when finished shooting. 

SHOOTING

  • The Range Staff and our neighbors would appreciate the exercise of restraint with respect to the rapid fire of semi-automatic weapons. Please slow it down. PLEASE, NO RAPID FIRING!

  • Fire only within the red range boundary markers.

  • Shoot in range areas only.

  • Shoot only at targets.

  • Fire only at targets placed on the appropriate target range.

  • Members shooting semi-automatic firearms and firearms with muzzle breaks should always show consideration to fellow shooters.

  • Keep action open until you are at the firing line.

  • When on firing line, close action and commence firing.

  • When finished firing, open action.

  • DO Not shoot jacketed ammo at metal targets, it ricochets and can cause injury.

  • When finished shooting, return all targets to proper storage are under covered firing area.

  • Always keep muzzle pointed down range or in a safe direction.

  • Guns shall only be loaded on the firing line.

AT THE END

  • Keep Rainbow Range clean for yourself and other members and guests.

  • Police all brass.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES

  • Wear eye and ear protection at all times.

  • Never use alcohol or drugs before or while shooting.

  • Keep muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times.

  • Know your target and what is behind it.

  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

  • All firearms should be handled as if loaded at all times.

  • A "hot" range is when firearms are being fired.

  • No one should be in front of the firing line for any reason.

  • A "cold" range is when everyone is informed that firing has ceased, and every firearm has an open action.

  • No one should be in the firing line area for any reason.

  • Do not touch a firearm or be in reach of a firearm when the range is "cold" for any reason.

  • All members should consider themselves safety officers and be alert of their surroundings.

  • @ Report any violations of range rules to the Range Safety Officer.

  • @ Do not hesitate to ask for help from the Range Safety Officer.

Range Rules

Failure to comply with the Rules of the Range may result in Range privileges being suspended for the remainder of the day or the membership may be terminated at the discretion of Range Staff.

1. Only firearms which may be legally possessed in California may be brought to the range.

2. Shoot from designated shooting positions only.

3. Police all brass and trash.

4. When a cease fire is called, all weapons shall be unloaded and set down with action open. Weapons shall not be handled while anyone is down range. A cease fire shall be called and range closed when anyone is down range. Stand behind white lines on Rifle Ranges “B, C” and Pistol Range “E.”

5. When finished shooting, return all targets to proper storage area under covered firing area.

6. The Range Staff and our neighbors would appreciate the exercise of restraint with the respect to the rapid fire of semi-automatic weapons. Please slow it down. PLEASE NO RAPID FIRING!

9. DO NOT use ceramic, glass, or steel targets.

11. When placing target frames in holders, or patching the targets, walk around to the back of the mound, do not walk up on the dirt slope.

12. Always keep muzzle pointed down range.

13. Guns shall only be loaded on the firing line.

14. Keep Rainbow Range clean for yourself and other members.

15. Report any problems to Range Staff.

16. Shoot only at targets.

17. Secure targets when finished shooting.

18. Members shooting semi-automatic firearms and firearms with muzzle breaks should always show consideration for fellow shooters.

19. Discarded ammo casings become the property of the Range, and are not to be removed from Range property

GUIDELINES: SHOOTING STEEL TARGETS 

  • Wear hearing protection and wrap-around eye protection.

  • Wear long pants (no shorts), long sleeve shirts and a cap with a brim.

  • Steel targets must have a Brinell Hardness of 500 or greater.

  • Never shoot at steel that is cratered, pitted or damaged in any way.

  • Do not use ammunition that exceeds 3000 feet per second (rifle) and below 750 feet per second (handgun, etc.).

  • Minimum distance from steel targets:

    • 10 yards for handgun

    • 100 yards for rifle

    • 100 yards for shotgun slugs

  • No armor-piercing, steel-core, steel jacketed or hardened ammunition, allowed.

  • No steel shot, pellets, BB's or other air gun projectiles, allowed.
